ICQ Skins
To use ICQ Skins, you need to have ICQ Plus. You can download the free program at www.icqplus.org. If you need help using and installing ICQ Plus, you can find help at www.1001icqskins.com/skin_faq.html. Basically, after it is installed, you will have a directory named "skins" right under the ICQPlus subdirectory. The ICQPlus directory is wherever you decided to install it. So, if you installed it in Program Manager, it might look like this:
C:\Program Files\ICQPlus\skins
If you've already done all these things, and ICQ Plus isn't working, you most likely didn't turn ICQ Plus on. If you have a system crash, sometimes you have to turn it back on then too. Just click on your start button, then choose programs, go to the ICQ Plus listing, and just click on the program. When it is installed and running, you will have a teeny "+" button up at the top of your contacts window (along with - and x). Clicking on the + button will give you the names of all the ICQ Plus skins you have installed. Clicking on the Plus button at the bottom of that window will give you all the ICQ Plus options.

Hot Bar Skins
Hotbar is a free customization scheme for Internet Explorer version 4 and above. It will replace the wallpaper option within the browser, and allows for easy storage and change of wallpaper. It will add the Hot Bar customization scheme to both Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer. It's pretty neat. The only problem is that it adds another bar below your address bar. In the new version, this can't be dragged elsewhere. It will also overwrite some of your personalized settings. WORD OF WARNING- Hotbar is considered Spyware, meaning that it transmit demographic data back to a remote server. If you have installed Hotbar and want to completely eliminate the reference to it on your computer, visit www.lavasoftusa.com for a FREE spyware removal utility. A simple uninstall will not remove the references.
If you would prefer a less intrusive program, use Microsoft's free MSIE addin, Toolbar Wallpaper. You can download a copy here. It is very small in size and will use any wallpaper in your wallpaper directory or the wallpaper from your desktop theme if you have Plus or Windows 98 or above.
WinAmp Skins
WinAmp used to be shareware, but it's now freeware! It allows a lot of customization including skinz. You can read about the program at their site. Just like the ICQ Skins, WinAmp skins modify the look of the player. I do not use WinAmp since it doesn't give me a "save" option, so can not provide any help on how to install or use it.
Messenger Skins
To download Messenger, go to http://messenger.yahoo.com. I do not have or use Yahoo Messenger, but I do have some helpful links to help you get started with skins. Yahoo has a tutorial at http://messenger.yahoo.com/messenger/help/themes.html. It will give you the basic elements of the skin.
