On most pages, when you click on a thumbnail to download a file you will be asked for a username and password. This is different than the password you created if you signed up for updates with Listbot. You must enter this information one time for each of you download sessions. This is necessary due to the problems I've had with bandwidth theft that actually cost me my site at one point. Bandwidth theft is people linking directly to my files from their websites. So when people download files from the other website, the files are actually being "pulled" from my site. For more information on this, see below.

Here is a conversation I had with a visitor that describes what bandwidth theft is in more detail.

Tracey

I found out today that due to exessive bandwidth my server has put my site on hold until we can come to some kind of agreement. This is due mainly to people linking directly to my files. Over 25% of my bandwidth is coming from remote links. So... it may be a few more days. Maybe until the end of the month.

Could you explain to me what bandwidth is...and why it was such a problem? Excuse my ignorance, however, i am trying to understand all this.   Tracey

...This is what bandwidth is... when you download something from a page (zip archive, graphics, html, really anything at all that you see) the server has to send that information through its lines. Most servers have a limit on the bandwidth (or transferred information) because if one account is using a lot of the system resources it slows down all their other connections that also have to use the same lines. Some servers actually charge the account by the bandwidth used. Therefore, if you put a link on your page that draws the information from another person's page, that person has to pay for the bandwidth since the source of the information is actually the other person's page.

A very generous and larger server will allow usually up to 15 gigs of transfer per month (usually it's less than this). After that 15 gigs of transfer has been exceeded, the account has to pay excess tranfer charges. I have been using around 30 gigs, and that would easily add a $300 bill to my account monthly. Because I wouldn't authorize the additional payment my bandwidth has been limited.

If you have ever tried to download themes from [name deleted] you'll be lucky to ever get a download. The reason is the server that this site is on is overtaxed and attempting to transfer information between all its accounts. That's why it's so slow (and useless).  If a server finds out that any one account is using over 20% of system resources that can generate a problem (which is what happened to me).
